Church History
The Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1902. At the time there were only a few members and as far back as we could  find information on the church it also served as a school for the in the area, it was a one room building. Hulbert, once known as Berkley's  Landing, now is a part of West Memphis,  having been annexed August 19, 1955. Hulbert is believed to have been named for William R. Hulbert, who owned property in the area in the 1800's.
Between South Avalon and the roundhouse, the railroad gave land to blacks for a cemetery which still remains and is known as the Morning Star Cemetery. The name was taken from the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, which is located west of South Avalon and dates from 1902. This information is recorded in the book 'A" History of Crittenden County, Arkansas, by Margaret Eliszabeth Woodfolk updated by Flossie Hubert in 2012.
